The Meatpacking District isn’t just home to the Dream Downtown—it’s a bustling location of art, shopping, restaurants and more. This month you can explore the area and find a lot of wonderful activities.
The Meatpacking District Improvement Association has installed an interactive art piece at the intersection of 13th Street and 9th Avenue that is currently concealing an unsightly shipping container. The MPIA didn’t want to leave an ugly fixture over a 24-month period in the middle of a busy area and by transforming it into a piece of art they are able to showcase local artists. There will be a new piece every two or three months, with local muralist and industrial designer Kiji McCafferty being the first.
When you spend enough time in Manhattan it can be easy to forget that there are stars up in the sky. The lights of the city glowing every night can be all consuming however, you can get a chance to see the stars again if you head over to the High Line every Tuesday this month. Starting at dusk, you can view the stars, planets, and the moon using high-powered telescopes from the Amateur Astronomers Association who are there to teach viewers about what’s in our skies.
If you’re looking to spice up your weeknights then head over to Subrosa on 63 Gansevoort St. Every Wednesday is La Rumba, a free event at the event space! Live Cuban Rumba, Timba, Salsa and Son is played by DJ David Medina. If weekday partying isn’t your thing then check out Habana Nights every Saturday featuring Danny Rojo + DJ Victor Raul.
